Passionate about rescuing and protecting rare & minority breeds of domesticated farm animals, William has created the Rare Breeds Farm near Stokes Bay, Kangaroo Island. With the bio-diversity in domesticated farm animals eroding at the alarming rate of two breeds per week globally, public awareness and support is needed to reverse this trend. These breeds represent unique, and irreplaceable, gene pools specific to certain regions of the world where they have been selected for their adaptation to specific environments (including resistance to endemic diseases & parasites), or for agricultural, cultural, and religious purposes over hundreds or even thousands of years. Due to changing market trends, civil unrest and/or the introduction of higher input exotic breeds of livestock, many of the indigenous and primitive breeds have been displaced and now face extinction.

Black Head Persian Sheep

Originate from Somalia and are a Fat-rumped sheep with a hair coat (not wool) highly adapted to the harshest of desert regions. Exclusive to the Rare Breeds Farm; the first and only flock of pure Black Head Persian sheep in Australia.

Ronderib Afrikaner Sheep (Cape Fat-tail)

Originate from the Cape region in South Africa. The first breed of sheep to arrive in Australia on the first fleet in 1788. Bred into extinction with the introduction of the Merino, the Ronderib Afrikaner has recently been reintroduced to Australia via embryo importation from South Africa. Currently there are only 4 flocks in Australia numbering approximately 200 animals in total.

Damara

Originate from Angola and Northern Namibia. A very hardy Fat-tail breed of sheep that sheds its winter coat of long hair and wool for a more practical short sleek hair coat for the summer eliminating fly strike problems, Damaras have not had colour selection placed upon them and so come in every colour and colour combination possible. Once in good numbers throughout their home countries, South Africa, and Australia now face extinction from indiscriminate cross breeding.
